Oud for Beginners: How to Choose Your First Oud Oil or Spray

3 min read

Walk through Eastleigh and you'll catch it: that deep, warm, smoky scent drifting from shops and passers-by. That's oud. If you've always admired it but never known where to start, this guide is for you.

What is oud?

Oud is a deep, woody fragrance note, traditionally linked to agarwood. It's loved across East Africa, the Middle East and beyond for being rich, long-lasting and full of character.

Today you'll find oud in many forms, from pure-style oils to modern sprays that blend oud with roses, vanilla, spices or citrus.

Oil or spray: which suits you?

Oud oils

  • Concentrated, so a tiny amount goes a long way
  • Sit close to the skin and tend to last a long time
  • Applied with a dab or roller, not sprayed
  • Can mark light clothes, so apply to skin

Oud sprays

  • Lighter and easier to apply evenly
  • Spread further around you
  • Often blended with other notes, so a good starting point if you're new
  • Easy to carry for top-ups

Many oud lovers wear both: a dab of oil on the wrists, then a spray over it.

Know the scent families

Oud rarely appears alone. Look at what it's paired with:

  • Rose and oud: soft, floral and romantic. A favourite for weddings and Eid.
  • Sweet oud: with vanilla, amber or caramel notes. Warm and comforting.
  • Spicy oud: with saffron, pepper or cardamom. Bold and confident.
  • Fresh oud: with citrus or green notes. Lighter, good for daytime and the heat.
  • Smoky or woody oud: the deepest and most traditional style.

If you're unsure, start with rose oud or sweet oud. They're the gentlest introduction.

How to test oud properly

Oud changes a lot after the first few minutes. Don't judge it from the bottle.

  1. Apply a small amount to your wrist or inner arm.
  2. Wait at least 15 to 30 minutes.
  3. Smell it again after an hour, and again later in the day.
  4. Notice how it feels on your skin. The same oud can smell different on different people.

Test one or two at a time. More than that and your nose gets tired.

How much should you wear?

Less than you think. Oud is strong.

  • Oil: one small dab on each wrist and perhaps one on the neck.
  • Spray: two or three sprays is usually plenty.

For the office, a mosque, a matatu or a hospital visit, go lighter. For an evening out, a wedding or Eid, you can wear a little more.

Caring for your oud

  • Keep bottles tightly closed.
  • Store them away from sunlight and heat.
  • Wipe the neck of oil bottles so they don't get sticky.

Skin comfort

Concentrated oils can be strong on sensitive skin. Test a small patch first. If you notice redness, itching or a rash, wash it off and stop using it. Speak to a pharmacist or doctor if it doesn't clear.
