Sunscreen for Dark Skin in Kenya: Why You Need It and How to Use It

3 min read

Kenya sits right on the equator, so the sun is strong all year, whether you're in Nairobi, Mombasa or up-country. Many people with dark skin grow up believing they don't need sunscreen. In reality, sun protection is part of good everyday skin care for every skin tone.

Why dark skin still needs sun protection

Melanin gives some natural protection, but not complete protection. Regular sun exposure can still:

  • Make dark marks and uneven patches look darker
  • Slow the fading of marks left by pimples
  • Dry out skin and leave it looking dull
  • Contribute to signs of ageing over time

If you're working to even out your skin tone, sunblock helps protect that effort.

How to choose a sunblock

Look at the label for these points:

  • SPF: this tells you about protection from UVB rays. For daily use, many people choose SPF 30 or higher.
  • Broad spectrum: this means it also protects against UVA rays.
  • Skin type: gel or light lotion textures suit oily skin. Creamier formulas suit dry skin.
  • Finish: some sunscreens leave a white or grey cast on dark skin. Tinted, clear or gel formulas are often easier to wear.

If you have sensitive skin, a skin condition or you use prescribed skin treatments, ask a pharmacist or doctor which type suits you.

How to apply it properly

Most people use too little. Follow the label for amounts, and keep these habits:

  1. Apply as the last step of your morning skincare, after moisturiser.
  2. Cover the face, ears, neck and the back of the hands.
  3. Don't forget the hairline and around the nose.
  4. Let it settle for a few minutes before applying make-up.
  5. Reapply as the label advises, especially if you're sweating, swimming or outdoors for long.

Avoiding the white cast

  • Rub in gently in small sections rather than all at once.
  • Try a gel or tinted formula.
  • Let it settle before judging. Some formulas blend in after a minute or two.

Fitting sunblock into your routine

A simple morning routine might look like this:

Keep a small tube in your bag for top-ups. And don't forget your lips: they burn too, so a lip product with SPF is worth having.

Other sun-smart habits

  • Wear a hat or carry an umbrella in the midday sun.
  • Seek shade between late morning and mid-afternoon when you can.
  • Drink plenty of water on hot days.

Children and family

Children spend a lot of time playing outside. Choose a sunscreen labelled for children and follow the label closely. For babies under six months, speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using any sunscreen, and keep them out of direct sun.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you notice a new or changing mole or mark, a sore that won't heal, or a rash or reaction after using a product. Sunscreen protects skin; it doesn't treat skin problems.
